The Minority Languages and Cultures Project brings together scholars who share the aims of revitalizing subordinate languages in Latin America, documenting the cultures of the communities that speak them, and monitoring the interplay of language and culture in the region's ethnic and national/local politics.
Created in 2002 by Jeffrey Gould, then the director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the MLCP has played a key role in CLACS's recent Title VI grants (2006-2014, 2018-) through a variety of conferences, lectures, and working groups, as well as the offering of courses in three less commonly taught languages: Quechua, Maya, and Haitian Creole.
The MLCP also is developing a partnership with Navajo Technical University that will work toward bringing together indigenous activists and educators from the United States and Latin America.
