CLACS-Sponsored Programs

• IU CLACS/OVPDEMA - Cultural Diversity and Intangible Heritage in Peru. Students learn about topics including the history of race politics and debates over national belonging in Peru. They also explore the recent promotion of cultural heritage and diversity by NGOs, grassroots organizations, the government, and international cultural policy entities as a potential engine for economic development. The trip includes visits to historical and cultural sites, academic institutions, NGOs, and interactions with local musicians, dancers, artisans, and craftspeople. • History of Race in the Americas The course explores of the development of racism and racial ideologies in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and South America from colonial times to the present. Emphasizes the interaction among cultural, political, and economic factors in shaping patterns of conflict and collaboration, domination and resistance.

Department-Sponsored Programs

• Department of Anthropology - Anthropology Field Program in Oaxaca, Mexico. This summer program in Oaxaca focuses on the heritage and cultural diversity of the city. Along with other IU students, participants are led by IU faculty to numerous local attractions and historic sites. Oaxaca is an ideal location for anthropological research in southern Mexico; it is home to 3.3 million people, including 16 major ethnic groups and speakers of two dozen distinct languages that live in 8 separate environmental zones.
• Department of Biology - Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Located in the Caribbean with a rich ecology, Grand Cayman is an ideal setting for this IU-administered, faculty-led summer program which focuses on the tropical ecology of the island. Participants take a tropical biology course with other IU students and travel on excursions to visit coral reefs, mangroves, and both terrestrial and marine habitats.
• Department of Biology - Tropical Biology in Costa Rica. Located in the cloud rainforests of Costa Rica, this program is centered in one of the most biologically rich areas of the world. For two weeks over winter break, participants travel, alongside other IU students with a faculty director, throughout Costa Rica while studying the tropical biology of the country.
• Department of Spanish and Portuguese - Spanish Conversation and Service Learning, Dominican Republic. This program is led by faculty from the IU Bloomington Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Participants engage in service projects and academic activities to improve their Spanish conversation skills.
• Kelley School of Business - Global Business Immersion. A set of courses, each offering students a unique opportunity to study a country or region in depth and then participate in an accompanying study tour abroad. This course is part of the sophomore-level Global Foundations Core offered to undergraduate students of business.
  
• School of Art, Architecture, and Design - Sustainable Products in Guatemala. This summer program is led by faculty from the IU School of Art, Architecture and Design. It immerses students in the complications and possibilities of the contribution of fair trade (principled) product to sustainable development, having both local and international implications. Students will delineate cultural, historical, and economic factors that have shaped artisan handmade production through museum study of textile traditions, eco-tours, the market at Chichicastenango, Wakami Village in Patulul, the colonial capital city Antigua, and a week at Lake Atitlan, an indigenous Mayan community.
• O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs - Global Human Resource Management in Barbados. Spend 3 weeks studying with SPEA faculty, University of West Indies (UWI) professors, and a diverse student body from throughout the Caribbean. UWI is the largest and earliest established institution of higher education in the English-speaking Caribbean. The Cave Hill campus of UWI is located on the northern outskirts of Bridgetown, the capital and largest city in Barbados.
• O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs - Island Conservation and Sustainability Management in Bonaire. You are invited to experience the richness of island culture, while studying within walking distance of the ocean. Join SPEA on the Caribbean island of Bonaire for two weeks this summer to explore island conservation and sustainability. This program is designed to explore and learn about the island's diverse ecosystems while gaining valuable field research experience by participating in the islands many ongoing conservation and sustainability programs.
• O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs - Food, Forests, and Community: Sustaining Costa Rica. Participants spend two weeks studying sustainability in Costa Rica. The country is well known for its progressive environmental and sustainability policies. In fact, it is the only country to meet all five United Nation’s Development Programme criteria established to measure environmental sustainability and plans to become carbon-neutral by 2025. Students experience many aspects of sustainability first-hand, from local to global, as they study “payment for ecosystem services” programs, community recycling initiatives, renewable energy, sustainable farming and fishing, cultural preservation and community development, poverty and public heath solutions, and park conservation.
• O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs - Public Policy in Cuba: A Comparative Study. This is a three-credit spring course that runs during the first eight weeks of the spring semester, culminating with a trip to Cuba over Spring Break. Prior to departure, participants study Cuban history, culture, and foreign policy and gain a general understanding of Cuba’s system of governance, social programs, and how Cuba’s economic and political model compares to democratic and capitalist systems such as the United States. The issues explored in Cuba are expected to include healthcare, social security, education, economic development, the legal environment, and the policy-making process.
• School of Public Health - Research and Anthropology in the Dominican Republic. Led by CLACS affiliate Prof. Charles Beeker, this course offers multidisciplinary research in underwater science for Public Health students in the Dominican Republic.
• School of Public Health - Global Environmental Health Issues in Ecuador. Led by CLACS affiliate Prof. Rodrigo X. Armijos, this course provides students with the opportunity to learn about the effect of environmental exposures on human health in underserved communities in Ecuador. Part of the Ecuadorian territory is located in the El Chaco region, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Environmental degradation is an important cause of the increased burden of chronic disease in Ecuador. Students will have an opportunity to observe first-hand different environmental situations showing the complexity of human-environment interaction. The summer course consists of classroom lectures, field site visits, and cultural activities that will provide unique insights into global environmental health and Ecuadorian culture.
